Pumpkin carving time

Pumpkin carving time

Its harvest time and pumpkins are now being picked ready for carving or making into soups and pies.

The traditional pumpkin that is used for carving that we see so many of at this the time of the year is a lovely orange colour.  It comes in many sizes and is great for carving.  However it is not the tastiest if you plan to eat it.  There are much better varieties for eating, which tend to harder tougher skins.

Carving is great fun and there is an abundance of ideas on the internet for designs.  Always choose a pumpkin that is solid.  Remember that they have probably been picked for a week or so, so any soft spots on them will mean that the pumpkin will probably not last until halloween.  Be very careful using sharp implements.

Show off your design with a tea light inside.  Remember to consign the pumpkin to the compost heap before it disintegrates into a soggy mess!
