Looking after the birds in Winter

Winter can be hard on birds and our current weather isn't helping.  Cold nights, snow and frost make life hard, so it is good to keep regular food supplies for birds in the garden.  Whilst birds can be fed all year round, is it especially important in the cold winter months.

Fat balls are good 'all round' food for wild birds.  Place them in feeders, hang them from trees, the house eves, or put them on bird tables.

Wild bird mix has a variety of seeds that will suit many birds, such as robins, sparrows and doves, while nyger seed is very good for smaller birds such as goldfinch.  There is a wide range of bird food available.

Make sure bird tables are kept clean and water changed regularly. Keep water dishes fresh and ice free.

Squirrels can be a nuisance - they are hungry too!.  Place food in squirrel-proof feeders to stop them stealing.

Enjoy the variety of wildlife in your garden.
