Feed the birds

Winter is a tough time for birds - food is short and the weather isn't good.  Our English winters can be cruel, so keep the food up for the birds.  While birds can be fed all year round, it is especially important in the cold winter months.

Fat balls are good all round food for wild birds.  They can be placed in special feeders, hung from trees or put on bird tables and are very nutritious.  Wild bird mix has a variety of seeds that will suit many birds, such as sparrows, robins and doves, while nyger seed is very good for smaller birds such as the goldfinch.

It is important to keep food tables clean, so regular checking is important.  Squirrels can be a nuisance, so placing food in squirrel-proof feeders is a good idea.

Birds still need water, so keep this fresh and ice free.

Enjoy the wide array of birdlife in your garden.
