December gardening jobs

If the weather is good there are still jobs that can be done in the garden -

Rhubarb can be forced - use a forcer or a dark coloured bucket over the crown.

Garlic can still be planted and will benefit from frosts later in winter.  Plant in the garden in well drained soil, or in pots, planting 1 inch deep.

Keep brassica's covered to stop pigeons getting at your Christmas sprouts!

Cover frost tender plants with fleece to protect them. Tender herbaceous plants that you are keeping in the garden, such as dahlias, will benefit from a mulch being put over them.

Feed the birds! A wide variety of foods are available, depending on the birds in your garden.  Keep birdbaths and feeders clean and change the food regularly.

December is a good time to consider how you will be using your garden in the spring.  Enjoy the birds and the warm days inside.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.
