Tips for January Gardening

Happy New Year! While the weather isn't too inviting at present, when it does improve and you want some fresh air, there are always things to do in the garden!

Keep feeding the birds!  Once the cold weather sets in they need extra help finding food.  Keep feeding areas clean, give them fresh water and healthy food.  We have a wide range of feeds and feeders in stock.  January is a good time to clean out bird boxes ready for spring.

Weed!  They always seem to be growing after all!  But try and stay off the ground, so that it does not become compacted.  Use a board on the ground to tread on to help.

Cover the vege patch with black polythene if you are super keen to get started.  This will help to raise the soil temperature, and will assist in keeping pesky weeds at bay!

Many deciduous trees can be pruned now.  Cut back dead wood, open up the tree to allow air flow.  Just don't get too carried away and always use sharp, clean secateurs.  Check tree ties and stakes to ensure they are firm but not restriciting the plant.

Keep the temperature of the greenhouse above 5 degrees if you are overwintering plants.  Use bubblewrap to insualte the greenhouse or use a heater.  Get your electric propogator ready for action soon.

Seeds are back in the shop, so January is a good time to plan the garden and get stocked up.

Enjoy the garden.
