This is a cast iron product and by the forces of nature may have suffered slightly from the effects of oxidisation on the surface. This effect is quite natural and creates an even more characterful (aged, shabby chic) ornament.

To remove rusting, brush off with a wire brush and paint with anti-oxidising paint which is available at most paint stores.
